WTF?!?!?

So we decided tempimages.com won't be so temporary. We plan to offer permanent accounts so the word "temporary" didn't have much meaning for us anymore.

Pixanova.com was the result of 3 straight days of searching for domain names and multiple rejections to buy pixalot.com at a price of $100 when the asking price was $600.

It seems that every domain with the word "pix" or "pics" is taken...and don't even get us started on the word "image"...

Pixanova...you can look at it two ways:

1) like casanova, we are the lover of images

or...

2) nova by definition is "a star that suddenly becomes thousands of times brighter and then gradually fades to its original intensity" so as long as we sell before we fade...we'll be ok.

The pixanova team...

Mon, 05 Oct 2009 19:34:00 -0700 The Logo - 50DollarLogo.com experiment http://pixanova.posterous.com/the-logo-50dollarlogocom-experiment http://pixanova.posterous.com/the-logo-50dollarlogocom-experiment

Its clear we are not designers.

One of the first comments we got after posting to HN was "your logo is pixelated". Yes, yes it is. We're just happy to have something that resembles a logo.

Then we ran into a blog post in which the author wrote about his experiences using the 50DollarLogo web service. The idea is simple, pay $50 and they'll send you 6 logos. You fill in some data (colors, what the business/website is about, any ideas you may have for the logo) and based on that they'll send you a top notch, fancy shmancy logo.

Too good to be true?!?! Well, kinda...

While I want this service to work I can't say I'm overly impressed. The two reasons we wanted someone else to do the logo is because:
1) we can't put two colors together to save our life and...
2) we aren't all that creative

The logos they sent back were all the suggestions/ideas I gave them: two different colors, arrows that symbolize upload download and an image in front of the name.

0 points for creativity.

But the main reason why I'm disappointed is that when you take a look at the logos not one of them suggests that we are a PHOTO service. You'd think they'd include an image of a photo or a picture frame or something along those lines. Bupkus...nada...but on the plus side we did get a choice of having a really cool color wheel as part of the logo.

I guess you get what you pay for.

I'm still rooting for these guys though and I hope we can work something out with the upcoming revisions.

to be continued....

Mon, 28 Sep 2009 14:29:00 -0700 Hacker News suggestions http://pixanova.posterous.com/hacker-news-suggestions http://pixanova.posterous.com/hacker-news-suggestions

Being avid readers of Hacker News we decided to release the first version out to the HN community.  We wanted to see what their thoughts and suggestions would be given that the reviews are usually pretty genuine.

I made the mistake of submitting our post (link here) just before going to bed. I figured by the time someone got around to answering it, it would have been morning anyhow. I was wrong. By the time I got up and checked it wed had about 15 comments and suggestions and since I wasn't around to follow up on the responses we missed the wave.

Regardless, we got a lot of suggestions that we'll be implementing over the next few days and more importantly we got some user data that gives us an idea of image sizes and number of images per slideshow.

About 300 visits from HN of which 40 created slideshows = ~%13 conversion rate. Not bad.

Based on the HN responses these are the things we'll be implementing:

  • auto generate URL
  • privacy policy / TOS
  • nicer graphics/layout
  • embed code for slideshows
  • privacy - password protect slideshow
  • sharing - little email box at the bottom of slideshow

Thu, 24 Sep 2009 21:38:00 -0700 And so it begins.... http://pixanova.posterous.com/and-so-it-begins-54 http://pixanova.posterous.com/and-so-it-begins-54

Two guys...tons of ideas...lots of work...good times...not so good times...millions in the karma bank...not so much in the real one.

Here we go again with a new idea.

The idea came up when Rob tried to list his sister's house on Craigslist but was only allowed to post 4 pictures. The thought was: 'why not have a place where you can just upload a bunch of photos, no registration, no signup, no hassle, turn it into a slideshow and create a link that the user can embed in an ad or just send to their friends.'

The pictures wouldn't have to stay on the web forever, maybe a month or so, and from there www.tempimages.com was born.

The process is simple...chose a name for the slideshow and upload your photos. No registration or signup, just those two steps and you're done. And then you can spend your time sharing the photos which is what memories are meant for anyhow...sharing.

We hope this solves a problem for some people. We like using it to share photos from the trips we take. Its simple, its easy and its super quick.
